Puntarenas region

The city of Puntarenas acts as the main gateway to the region, extending across its 1,517 sq. miles and 264 miles of coastline, which include parts of the Nicoya Peninsula and the maritime corridor that connects Punta Conejo to Puerto Caldera. This network links coastal communities, the peninsula, and the islands through active maritime transport.

The main activities revolve around beach enjoyment and marine environments, with attractions based on islands, inlets, and scenic coastal landscapes. Visitors can explore land‑based and marine protected areas, participate in excursions departing from Puntarenas, and enjoy experiences ranging from traditional seaside lodging to all‑inclusive facilities located close to the ocean.

Its strategic location, just two hours by car and 74 miles from the Central Valley, makes this spectacular area easily accessible for both domestic and international travelers.

The peninsula subunit features important tourism hubs such as Tambor, Santa Teresa, and Montezuma, all characterized by beautiful natural spaces and outstanding beach environments. This area also includes key conservation sites like the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve, as well as the islands of San Lucas, Chira, Tortuga, and Coco.

Mountain and cloud forest tourism is defined by the Monteverde subunit, located north of Puntarenas, known nationally and internationally for its conservation efforts and nature‑centered lifestyle. Santa Elena serves as the main service and tourism center, with San Luis and Gerardo forming additional communities of interest.

The primary attraction is the Monteverde Biological Reserve; however, visitors can also enjoy numerous nature sites, picturesque trails, hanging bridges, and biodiversity exhibits that feature butterflies and frogs.
